Credit transfer

We had an interesting discussion this morning about credit transfer, having received a request from a centre. Credit transfer means awarding a pass in one Unit based on a pass in another Unit. This can be desirable when a learner has a mix of Units (taken as part of different qualifications) that they want to “transfer” to one award. It’s typically done when students want to transfer Unit passes in an old qualification to a new one.

The final decision about credit transfer lies with the centre. But the Group Award Specification (GAS) has a section on Credit Transfer that often, not always, lists equivalent Units from the old to the new awards (and vice versa). In fact, credit transfer is about evidence. So lots of different things can count as evidence for a Unit pass. That’s why it has to be a centre decision — verified by the External Verifier if/when they visit. Of course, if you use the table of equivalent Units (if there is one in the GAS) then there is no possibility of verification problems but centres are encouraged to use their discretion.

Please note that we can’t respond to requests to check your credit transfer decisions since it is left to your professional judgement.

In any case, I’m glad you took the time to tell me what you thought

It’s enlightening to understand the process’s flexibility and the emphasis on evidence-based assessment. This approach not only respects the learner’s previous achievements but also encourages a more integrated educational journey. It’s great to see such support for personalized learning paths, highlighting the importance of adaptability in educational frameworks.
