Coding units are coming
As part of the review of NC Computer Games Development, we plan to create a suite of programming units. These new units – entitled Computer Programming – will be available at SCQF Levels 4, 5 and 6 (National 4, National 5 and Higher).
The motivation for creating them is to give learners time to focus on coding. Existing qualifications tend to cover the whole software development process (design, implementation, testing), leaving little time for learners to actually code. These units will solely focus on coding. The units will be hierarchical – meaning that each level is a superset of the level(s) below. We’re using a framework to decide what-goes-where. You can see it here. We’d be delighted to receive your comments.
We hope that the units will be useful to all learners – not just Computing students. Coding is becoming a vital skill for everyone. They will be written with this in mind. Another goal is to make them women-friendly to attract more women to coding.
Please contact Emma if you want to know more about these units or the Computer Games Development awards.

A little light on detail to make a fuller comment but I do like the idea of coding only units. Typically we’re pairing our own coding units with other SQA (theory) units at this level to achieve that instead.
The end result will be much the same but now they get an SQA certification instead.
