QDT meeting for Next Gen Computing

The Qualification Development Team (QDT) for Next Gen Computing qualifications met this afternoon to discuss progress with the development. It was the fifth meeting of the committee since the start of the second phase of developments.

Five Higher National Qualifications (HNQs) are involved in this work:

  1. HNC Computing (phase 1)
  2. HND Computer Science (phase 2)
  3. HND Data Science (phase 1)
  4. HND Networking & Cloud Infrastructure (phase 2)
  5. HND Software Development (phase 2).

The development work was completed some time ago so the focus of today’s meeting was the experience of the centres during last year’s pilot of HNC Computing. The core team also reported on minor changes to HNC Computing (as a result of the experience last year) and our plans for piloting two HNDs this year (HND Networking and HND Software Development). Please note that no-one came forward to pilot HND Computer Science or HND Data Science.

It’s been a very large development, involving the creation of over 50 new or revised Higher National Units in areas such as AI, cyber security, data science, emerging technologies, Machine Learning and Software Engineering.

The main change from last year is the grading model, which has been simplified to focus on key competences. It will be interesting to discover if the revised model is better when it is tested this year.

It was a constructive meeting and our plans for the current session were well received.
