QDT meeting for Next Gen Computing

The second meeting of the Qualification Development Team (QDT) for the second phase of Next Gen HN took place yesterday afternoon. There was another excellent turnout, with over 20 members attending, representing colleges, universities and employers.

The first phase of Next Gen developed two qualifications: HNC Computing and HND Data Science. This work is now complete. The second phase will develop three qualifications: HND Computer Science, HND Networking & Infrastructure and HND Software Development. This QDT is responsible for these second phase qualifications.

It was a positive, constructive meeting. The lead developers for each qualifications (who are all practising teachers) updated members about their consultations to date and their ideas for what their respective qualifications should look like. There was broad support for the direction of travel. I was particularly pleased that members want a consistent approach to all Next Gen Computing qualifications, with the same basic structure for each qualification.

The next stage is the most important one — we have to finalise frameworks and get down to writing the various component units. We’ll be doing that between now and September. The qualifications will be finalised in December and available for piloting in August 2023.
