QDT for NPA Computing

The second meeting of the Qualification Development Team (QDT) for NPA Computing took place yesterday. Sixteen people attended, representing schools, colleges, universities, employers and national organisations.

The lead developer and me reported on the consultation that has taken place since the first meeting. There was a huge response (195 respondents) to the survey and the lead carried out a large number of one-to-one interviews. We proposed a number of options to members.

There was broad agreement about the following.

  • We’ll develop Levels 4, 5 and 6.
  • Each level will comprise four credits (24 SCQF points).
  • All of the levels will have the same basic structure.
  • The qualification (at all levels) will have a core-and-option structure.
  • A project unit will be included (mandatory).
  • One other unit will be mandatory that will cover the fundamentals of the subject.
  • The remaining credits (2) will be selected from a list of options.

So, the qualification is shaping-up to look like this.

  • Computer Fundamentals (1)
  • Computing Project (1)
  • Options (2).

Our next task is to fully define the qualification (at all levels) and get QDT approval so that we can get down to writing the component units.
