National Occupational Standards

Many of you will be familiar with National Occupational Standards (NOS), which were produced and maintained by Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) for many years. NOS were used to develop occupational standards that under-pinned SVQs. The demise of most SSCs (including E-Skills and Tech Partnership, which were responsible for NOS in the IT sector) resulted in Skills Development Scotland taking up the role of developing and maintaining NOS (for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). The most recent developments in the vocational sector were based on Work Situations, which are similar to NOS in that they define workplace standards.

SDS is currently updating NOS for the IT sector. Work is taking place in the following areas:

  1. IT business analysis
  2. Digital learning development
  3. User centred development, user research and service design
  4. Data engineering
  5. IT operations delivery
  6. Cyber security

This work will be carried out over 2022/23. SDS plans to consult with employers, training providers and others regarding the revised NOS. The consultation for IT Business Analysis is open now.
