Learner feedback on Next Gen Computing
Regular readers will know that Computing is one of the subjects being modernised as part of SQA’s Next Gen project. Part of that programme involves learner evaluation of their experiences when undertaking these new qualifications. Emma Campos, who many of you will know as a previous member of the Computing team, carried out this evaluation. I thought you might be interested in her findings. So, I’ll let Emma tell you in her own words.
“Learners taking HNC Computing:
Find the NextGen qualification less stressful than previous qualifications they have taken, due primarily to the layout and grading approach in NextGen.
Like the broad, comprehensive content in the qualification.
Feel the balance of knowledge and skills is good.
Enjoy the practical elements of the course, although some learners expressed a concern around the lack of practical activities for specific areas, eg Data Science or Networking.
Enjoy the project-based group work in NextGen.
Like the reduced assessment.
Have an increased level of awareness of meta-skills, in comparison to last year’s learners, with most learners having done their self-assessment and development plan.
Continue to struggle to understand the importance of meta-skills and how they might apply these in context.
Have limited awareness of sustainability in the context of their subject.
Learners taking HND:
Feel the transition to the HND has been smooth.
Fee this year is more structured and organised than HNC.
Feel the units are more connected and flow better.
Consider the balance of knowledge and skills is good. Some learners had not progressed from the NextGen HNC and they felt this qualification was very different, with units that were current and relevant for industry; a notable reduction in assessment; and more project-based assessment.
Continue to enjoy group projects.
Acknowledged meta-skills had been introduced earlier this year and recognised the value of the SQA meta-skills resources. However, some learners continued to struggle to see the relevance of meta-skills to their subject.
Showed limited awareness of Learning for Sustainability.
I was pleased with the feedback. Unsurprisingly, the second year of the pilot went better than the first year but, overall, learner feedback was very positive. Please contact Emma if you want more details.
