Grading in the new Higher Nationals
One of the big changes that are part of Next Gen is the introduction of grading to modernised Higher National Qualifications (HNQs). Currently, one unit (the Graded Unit) is awarded a grade (A, B or C), the other units are ungraded (pass/fail).
Next Gen introduces whole-qualification grading. One of three grades will be awarded:
- Achieved.
- Achieved with Merit.
- Achieved with Distinction.
Learners will be awarded HNC Computing: Achieved with Merit (for example). Different subjects are trialling different (but similar) models. Computing has adopted the key component model, which comprises two components:
- portfolio
- project.
These components will be separately graded (Achieved, Merit or Distinction) and the grades combined to produce a qualification grade (Achieved, Merit or Distinction).
The portfolio will include each learner’s best work, produced during the qualification, selected by the learner. This is likely to include computer programs, data analyses, security audits, network diagrams, etc. The project is a traditional computing project (such as a software development task) done in a team.
Two centres are currently piloting HNC Computing and will test the grading model in the coming months.
