First meeting of the development team for HNC Computing
As regular readers will know, we’ve started the review of HNC Computing. The Qualification Development Team (QDT) met for the first time last week, using Microsoft Teams.
Martyn Ware, Head of Transformation, gave an interesting presentation about “HN Next Generation”, which is the modernisation programme for Higher National awards. The new HNC Computing will be one of the first “HN Next Gen” qualifications (along with one from engineering and one from broadcasting). New HN awards will be different from the existing ones. There’s going to be a common core, across all HN qualifications, some sector specific units and some vocational (industry-based) units.
The QDT suggested a thematic approach to the design of the new HNC, with themes relating to computer science, data science and software development, among others. Martyn suggested that new HNs should be more project-based with larger (and fewer) component units. New HNCs are likely to be bigger (more credits) than the existing qualifications.
We’re still working on the design principles and we’re in the process of selecting lead developers for each of the awards in the suite (HNC Computing, HND Computer Science, HND Data Science, HND Networking & Infrastructure and HND Software Development). Once leads have been identified and the design principles firmed-up, we’ll get down to designing the new HNC.
Please contact Helen for more information about this development.
