The Future of Jobs and Skills

The World Economic Forum (in Davos) looked at future skills and employment trends over the period 2016-2020. The full report can be found here [PDF] and an Executive Summary here [PDF]. It predicts a global reduction in employment (mostly in “routine manual” and “routine cognitive” jobs) but an increase in technology related jobs, particularly data analysts. Technology will pervade all employment by 2020. Cloud computing, mobile technology and the Internet of Things will begin to have significant impact on jobs. There will also be a significant fall in office and administrative jobs.

Following on from that report, President Obama announced,  in a blog post, a Computer Science for All initiative, which involves a $4 billion fund to ensure that every child from 5-17 receives an education in Computer Science. He points out that in the next two years over half of all jobs in the STEM area will relate to computer science.
