National Qualifications

As you begin the new school term, we understand that you will want to know how your National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses will be assessed.

Earlier this week, the Scottish Government confirmed that exams will take place in 2022, if it is safe to do so.

We know you have faced disruption to your learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To take account of this disruption, SQA has already shared changes to assessments and exams with teachers and lecturers. You can read this information here by selecting a subject and then selecting the ‘Course information 2021-22’ tab.

We are also continuing to discuss additional measures that can be put in place should there be further significant disruption to your learning. We will share more detail with you as soon as we can.

Below are some questions and answers relating to National Qualification assessments in 2021-22.

Will exams take place in 2022?

Yes – the Scottish Government has confirmed that an exam diet for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses will be held in Spring 2022, so long as it is safe to do so.

When will exams take place?

SQA exams will take place from 26 April to 1 June 2022 with results day on 9 August 2022. The exam timetable will be issued as soon as possible.

We have faced disruption to our learning due to the pandemic – how will this be taken into account?

The changes to assessments and exams outlined in June take the disruption to your learning into account. These changes will still give you the opportunity to show your knowledge and skills throughout the year.

Will exams take place if there is further disruption to learning?

If the pandemic results in further significant disruption to your learning, we will take steps to ensure exams can go ahead fairly.

For example, for some courses you could be given advance notice of which topics will be included in exams.

What if the pandemic means that exams can’t take place?

If public health advice changes, and large gatherings of people are no longer allowed in April to June 2022, exams might be cancelled. If this happens, your teachers or lecturers will decide your grades. These will be based on assessment evidence of your knowledge and skills which has been gathered throughout the year, for example through prelims, practical performances and class tests. You will not be asked to complete any additional assessments.
