Hierarchies in Group Awards – New CfE Units
Hierarchies is the term used to describe National Units designed to form a structured sequence involving two or more SCQF levels. You can identify National Units in hierarchies as the first 4 characters in the Unit codes and the Unit titles are the same.
Some of the new CfE Units are in hierarchies. The file below details the CfE Units in hierarchies – information is included for National 4, National 5 and Higher Units in Biology, Chemistry, Human Biology and Physics.
SQA’s Awards Processing System will not allow more than one National Unit in a hierarchy to contribute to the achievement of a Group Award – only the highest level of National Unit achieved by a learner will contribute to the achievement of the Group Award.
For example, a learner completes two Biology Units as part of the level 5 NC Applied Sciences Group Award:
- Cell Biology at National 4 (H207 74)
- Cell Biology at National 5 (H207 75)
In the example above, the learner would be certificated for both National Units but only one credit (Cell Biology at National 5) would contribute to the achievement of the level 5 NC Applied Sciences Group Award as only the highest level of National Unit achieved by a learner will contribute to the achievement of the Group Award.
Centres therefore need to carefully consider the Units that learners will complete in order to ensure that the minimum number of credits for a Group Award is always achieved.
