Edinburgh Food Heritage Trail – Free workshop for schools

Edinburgh World Heritage and National Library of Scotland are holding a workshop and trail for schools to find out more about the city’s food history.

Join Mrs Grant, a housewife from Georgian Edinburgh, at the workshop, which starts with a tour around the new National Library of Scotland exhibition ‘Lifting the Lid’, highlighting some of the exhibits. Then Mrs Grant will take pupils on a historic food trail of the Royal Mile, finishing in a secret garden at the offices of Edinburgh World Heritage in Bakehouse Close.

This workshop will look at the changes to our diet throughout history, the links between food and the Old Town’s historic buildings, and pose questions about the food we eat today and its sustainability. A resource pack linked to the workshop will also be available.

The workshop, which lasts around 1.5 hours is suitable for Primary 5 – 7 and covers Health & Wellbeing, social studies and technology curriculum areas. The workshop takes place on September 2, 3, 8 (morning only), 9, 14, 15, 29, 30; October 6, 7; at 10.00am and 12.30pm. Dear Sir or Madam,
we will be on a class trip in Edinburgh from 20th to 24th September 2015.
We are a group of 35 students (age 18 and older) and three teachers from a vocational school in Lueneburg, near Hamburg, in the north of Germany. Our students’ aim are the A-level exams and beside the general subjects their main subject area is ecotrophology (nutritional science and home economics). Therefore we are very interested in the tour you are offering.
Do you think it might be possible to offer such a tour for older students preferably on the 23rd September in the afternoon?

We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Susanne Jochim (English teacher)
