Support group for NPA Data Science

SQA’s remit is to develop and maintain national qualifications. We also produce some support materials (assessments) for centres and, of course, provide the annual diet of examinations. Our support role is normally limited to these activities but every now and again we’re able to go further and provide additional support to centres in the form of teaching and learning material. Thanks to extra funding from the Scottish Government, we were able to provide significant additional support for NPA Cyber Security, and I know from feedback from teachers that this has been well received.

We’d like to do something similar for the recently developed NPA Data Science. There are many parallels with cyber security. Both areas are new and challenging — and teachers want to learn about both areas but need help to do so. There’s no additional funding this time so I plan to create a short life working group (SLWG) to identify what teachers need, and explore how it could be provided. We’ve made a start by agreeing to provide additional assessments.

The remit of the group is simple:

  • identify the needs of teachers
  • identify what’s already available
  • agree what extra needs to be provided.

We’re looking for people who can help with these tasks — particularly anyone who can make a contribution to (or donate) resources. I’ve already been approached by business representatives, such as Price Waterhouse Coopers, to ask how they can help.

Please contact Emma is you’re interested in participating in the SLWG. It won’t take up much of your time. There’ll only be one or two face to face meetings with most of the communications being done online.
