HN review update

It’s been a while since I last updated you about our plans to review a number of core Higher National awards. The qualifications due for review are:

  1. HNC Computing
  2. HND Computer Science
  3. HND Networking
  4. HND Technical Support
  5. HND Software Development.

We carried out “scoping” of the required changes and it was agreed that HND Technical Support and HND Networking would be rolled-up into a new, single award entitled HND Networking & Infrastructure to reflect changes in industry.

More recently, we scoped HND Data Science, the outcome of which was that we should proceed to develop HND Data Science – but not HNC. The reason being that HNC Computing is a sufficient basis for progression to the HND. Even more recently, I’ve been looking at uptake figures for my portfolio. There has been no uptake for HNC Data Analytics since it was introduced in 2017. This qualification was devised to provide an articulation route between colleges in Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde, but circumstances changed and that progression path never happened.

So, the current plan to is review/develop the following suite of awards.

  1. HNC Computing
  2. HND Computer Science
  3. HND Data Science
  4. HND Networking & Infrastructure
  5. HND Software Development.

HNC Data Analytics would be folded into HNC Computing. There are a couple of current developments that will feed into this review. The units developed as part of PDA Cyber Security and PDA Data Science are likely to be appropriate to some of these awards.

We’re waiting on the green light to proceed with this work but a Qualification Development Team has been created and is good to go. We want to be part of HN Next Gen, which will change the design rules for Higher National awards. I’ll keep you posted about possible start dates. In the meantime, please contact Helen is you want to get involved in this development.
